Ok, so every wizard should have a pet.  Pets are great because they make great companions and they help in you battles and they are just all around fun.  Some people are obsessed with rare pets.  Some wizards are working on the perfect pvp pet (talents that buff you or debuff yer opponent).  And some people just want a cute pet or a kewl pet.  Wiz handbook on pet basics.  Wiz handbook on PvP basics.

Well, I don't know all about pets but here is a list of current pets in the game and the people who put this together have also listed all the talents that might be manifested by the pet.  This means that the first generation of a pet has a chance to manifest one of the talents in its petnome (pet genome).

POSSIBLE PET TALENTS (1ST GENERATION OF PET)

You should review yer wizard handbook regarding pets to get the basics of pets and if you want to start hatching get ready to spend gold on hatching and snacks

Key thing about hatching: while pets can pass on the chance to manifest any talent in its genome they are far more likely to pass on talents they have already manifested.  Also, if you want specific talents but you dont know any one pet that has the ones you want you will need to hatch and hatch and hatch with all the pets that do have the talents you want until you have what you want.

If you are lucky you will get 2 of the talents you are trying for in a hatch (that's if you are very lucky, actually) and most of the time you will get 1 of the talents you want in a hatch.  So, be patient, be dilligent and farm like crazy.  Also, many wizards debate over whether or not a pet has its manifestable talents pre-determined at the time its egg hatches.  Personally, I have known too many wizards who tested this in test realm and then live realm and I firmly trust their results and believe the pet's talents are pre-determined at the time it's egg hatches.  This means you don't hafta focus on training in a certain way or feed it specific stat boosting snacks.  I do believe pets fed 'liked' or 'loved' snacks will improve certain talents better as they 'grow' (like proof, pain giver, storm giver).  Specifically, pets fed snacks they like or love will always gain more points to power than on snacks they dont like or love.  Here is a link to a page all about pet snacks.  My favorite pet snacks are the crafted cereal snacks and all pets seem to like them if not love them.
